Pathology Lab Specimens Labels
To protect patients from adverse errors caused by improperly labeled specimens, laboratory policy requires that proper labeling standards be met at all times. Each specimen brought to the laboratory must be labeled on the container in which it was placed. The label must contain the following legible information:
Patient name
Patient medical record number, with check digit
Patient location
Collection date and time
Specimen type and/or source
Test required (note any special handling required)
Ordering physician
Precautions for Pathology Lab Specimens Labels:
Tubes containing specimens must be directly labeled
Use a thermal transfer printer with a stain-resistant resin ribbon to print barcodes, as printouts are resistant to most harsh solvents, such as formalin and alcohol, and won’t rub off like pens or other types of ink
Appropriately apply the label to the tube so that the barcode can be scanned
Choose the appropriate label, samples stored under low temperature conditions of liquid nitrogen, use ultra-low temperature resistant specimen labels
