BS5609 is a British standard for pressure sensitive labels for marine applications. BS5609 is also known as the test standard for immersion labels, it is an internationally recognized standard that must be adhered to when labelling containers of hazardous chemicals used for maritime transport. The purpose of BS5609 is to ensure that labels remain valid even after months at sea. Proper labeling reduces the likelihood of negative environmental and health impacts from lost chemical containers at sea.

Why is BS5609 Compliance Important?

Drums and other types of containers are used to transport hazardous materials such as solvents, paints, petroleum products, chemicals and hazardous waste. Each container must have a GHS label with information about the contents and the hazards involved. When these containers are shipped by sea, the GHS label must be able to withstand prolonged exposure to salt water. Because the container can be washed off the ship in a storm or accident, the GHS label must also be able to withstand immersion in salt water for three months as well as wear from contact with sand and rocks.
