What is BS5609?
BS5609 is the internationally recognized British Standard for pressure-sensitive adhesive labels used for overseas transport. Also known as the Marine Immersion Label Test Standard, it is referred to by chemical manufacturers when using their labels on containers of hazardous chemicals for marine transport.
BS5609 certification determines whether the label remains adhesive and readable after prolonged exposure to the marine environment, including abrasion from seawater and sand.
Elements including GHS requirements such as red and black ink for GHS pictograms, hazard statements and health warnings must remain legible on the label with minor or no color change or print removal to pass the BS5609 test.
